Arab Startup Competition 2014: Ideas Track - Semi-finalist

Description

Alleph will be an interactive online space that provides opportunities for Arabic speaking students (ages 10-18) to develop their literacy skills and engage in public discourse around issues of importance and relevance to their lives. Alleph will work in the following manner: 1. “Story starter” by prominent public figure: The Alleph team will invite prominent Arab public figures (authors, activists, TV or Radio program hosts, news anchors, artists, etc.) to write the start of a story. This “story starter” or “Chapter 1” will be posted online, along with the name and profile of the person who wrote it. 2. Student submissions open for Chapter 2: The floor will now open for students who are registered with Alleph to continue the story and write their version of "Chapter 2" while adhering to the general criteria of submission (e.g. a specified word count or range and a timeframe/deadline). 3. Feedback on submissions: Once a student submits their "Chapter 2", one of our Arabic language specialists will review their submission and either accept it, or provide the student with feedback on their writing and suggestions on how it can be improved in order to be accepted. The student is allocated a defined period of time to review and re-submit. 4. Submissions close and voting process begins: When the submission deadline has passed, all students registered with Alleph will get the chance to read all "Chapter 2" submissions and vote for their favorite one(s). Voting will be anonymous and internal. 5. Winning chapter announced and submissions open for next chapter: When the voting has taken place, the "Chapter 2" with the most votes will become the official second chapter of the story, and submission for "Chapter 3" will open. This process will continue for 4 to 5 chapters before the story is finalized. 6. Title and illustrations: Story is complete. Students now have the opportunity to propose a book title (which will be voted on) and then the process will repeat itself for illustrations for the cover and/or different chapters. 7. Publication (online or print)
