Innovate For Refugees 2019: Ideas Track - Winner

Description

We want to be a primary provider of engineering solutions in developing regions, and to educate anyone to reproduce, modify, and implement our engineering system. We offer two main products, the EngBOX and professional training.

EngBOX enables everyone to be an engineer. The EngBOX integrates existing electronic sensors and development boards. These technologies consist of microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, electronic components, and connectivity modules. Each kit contains basic components and sensors to build solutions addressed to water, food, and energy. We provide affordable engineering kits that enable users to improve advance and develop a better community. By following a few simple steps, people in poor regions and emergencies can experience first-hand how technology and engineering can help them to change their lives and build a more sustainable world.Students not only are building a solution, they are learning engineering while solving real-world problems in their community. Students feel as if they can be a part of the solution.

We are unique because we empower refugee learners to create and apply engineering solutions to their own community, and we specifically teach engineering using holistic approaches that research has shown appeal more to girls/women. Rather than ask displaced learners to wait for high quality electricity provision, medical prostheses, or water regulation, this course empowers them to design and implement their own. Our curriculum teaches a universally relevant engineering design process but allows students to apply it in their own way. This authentic learning environment is student-centered, project-/problem-based, and holistic.
