BloomMasters 2017: Social Entrepreneurship Track
Created in 2015, Tazart is a social company specialized in drying and packaging figs in Tataouine. This region where villagers have only trafficking as a source of revenue (90% of their economic activity) has seen its unemployment rate increasing to 28.5% after strengthening security measure against Libya. In fact, Libya was the hub of their region's economy and villagers were condemned to live from traffic business without having other alternative. This region is also the core of Berber culture in Tunisia. The fig is a fruit strongly related to this culture and it’s collected at Edhhiba where some Berber villagers still substitute in the mountain of Edahar. Because of the hard geographic isolation, figs ‘producers cannot access the market of fresh figs. As a result, they were obliged to sell their harvest at low prices as industrial figs intended for the distillation. In order to offer the best alternative to the farms, Tazart began implementing the drying techniques, the most developed. We realized a trusting relationship with figs ‘producers while ensuring them a stable source of revenue. Similarly, we have worked for improving the quality of figs from planting and maintenance of the fig tree to the gathering of figs. In order to enhance the value of dried figs, we created a packaging unit with 3 women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Dried figs are now marketed in several forms (natural, in cubes, with olive oil, dried fruit ...) and for various uses (snack in aperitif, sweets for children, hotels, pastries ...) and in a network of more than 70 distributors (delicatessens, wholesalers, distilleries ...).
